It's been a long time since my last post. I think I've finally come to terms that a blogsite for make up reviews isn't for me. For one thing, I'll use up a lot of resources to purchase and fund the make up I review, only to realize that I have way too much make up in my room. And the other is that I have other interests that I'd also like to pursue. So I'm changing directions and blog about other things that hopefully, you guys will like. But don't fear! I'll still talk about make up, when I end up buying something I really like.

I've always wanted to enroll in Pro Makeup Classes in Maquillage Professionnel, but I thought it was just a little pricey. But I was privileged enough to get into the module for Personal Makeup Workshop and I find it enjoyable. So I've come to the conclusion that this would probably be worth it :)

Makeup Your Mind by Francois Nars

Guess who I bumped into the bookstore the other week: Francois Nars. Oh how I wish it were true, but kidding aside, I bumped into the book authored by Francois Nars titled Makeup Your Mind.

Here is the very simple but striking book sleeve. Isn't beautiful?

And let me give you the obligatory front & back cover tour with a bonus photo - the spine!

Now let us move on to the short and sweet table of contents, with the signature NARS style.

The book is actually spring bound.

To allow you to do this:

Francois Nars placed the before and after photos of the model side by side so we can study the difference of the two. It is supposed to help us figure out where the make was placed.

I particularly like how the transparent film plots out where the make up is used. But sometimes they don't align with the photo beneath that well. It is only a minor inconvenience for me.

Everything that Francois Nars used on the model is also indicated on the transparency. Clever isn't it?

I think he anticipated that some of us might need a little more instruction to be able to make the looks he compiled in the book. So at the end of each section, he puts all the looks in the particular section and puts the instructions in detail.

I also like how all the looks are in one spread. It makes choosing what I want to try out much easier.

And I mustn't forget to mention that for each section, there is a lengthy compilation of expert tips and details. Unlike other books that discusses the basics of skin care and products. He breaks it down to the essentials and explains how to do it and what it should look like, quite well.

For each subheading, Nars also offers us some expert tips. I find it useful and could potentially make trying out the looks much easier.

I adore how he closes each write up for the section with a "Don't be afraid to..." part. It might just only be me, but it feels like reading those things from an expert gives me a little assurance. It makes me a little bit bolder in terms of trying out new things in make-up.

A word of caution though. The layout for this part is visually appealing from a far, but I find that it isn't particularly conducive to reading. But again, that is a minor thing compared to what you will learn when you read this part.

Quotes from stylish people also adds a nice touch.

The book contains beautiful timeless and versatile looks. I am pleased to welcome this in my book collection, and I'm also so pleased with Francois Nars put in the book - I became an instant Nars fan girl. He is both a makeup artist and photographer - my kind of thing. I wish he could mentor me.

But sadly for now, I just have this lovely book. I'll try doing some of the looks and maybe post it if I'm brave enough.

DIY: Brush Keeper

Keeping makeup brushes clean and dust/germ free is important. It could mean the difference between clear skin and blemished skin which can be caused by the dust and bacteria in the air that settles on the brushes. We all wash our makeup brushes but what do we do with them afterwards, we put them in brush holders but the bristles are exposed. Here's a quick and inexpensive way of keeping all the undesirables - like dust and what nots off your makeup brushes.

Here's what you would need:
a covered container that's tall enough to acoomodate all your brushes and something to keep your brushes upright in the container. This could be a pencil holder or the brush holder that you already use.

Materials

This is my setup. I got the container from SM Homeworld and costs Php95. It is meant to be used for cutlery or other kitchen stuff but I had other plans for it. I used my old brush holders for this DIY (my mom got it for me from Muji four years ago just in case you're wondring ü ).

The first thing I did was to take the utensil holder, remove the label and take it apart. It has a built in divider that is detachable but the space is just too wide for my brushes they didn't stand up the way that I wanted them to do.

The next thing that I did was to put my brush holders in the middle of the container so the bristles of the brushes won't get damaged when it is time to cover them up. I didn't glue them on the container so they can be cleaned easily.

Finally, I placed all my makeup brushes in the container and covered it. Tadah! The brushes are now protected from all the dirt that floats in the air when they are not in use.

So, I hope this simple, cost efficient, effortless idea helps you, my fellow makeup obsessed/geek/junkie friend :)

Accessories, accessories, accessories! ♥

I saw this cocktail ring at one of the boutiques in Northeast Square the other week. I was debating whether I should purchase it. I loved the turquoise and the detail of the ring, it just caught my eye. But, the rings were from PhP350-PhP400 and I had my heart set on a bright yellow rose ring, and I just adored it and bought that instead.

I consider it a stroke of luck that I didn't buy this ring in that botique because I encountered it again in another shop called Girl Shoppe. And you'd never guess how much this is - it's PhP 50! Could you believe that?! It also comes in other colors like red, yellow and purple. There's also an interesting connector ring with the words LOVE all over it - sadly it doesn't fit my plus sized fingers.

I never really cared much for Girl Shoppe, it's literally everywhere in the tsiange (bazaar) in the Greenhills Shopping area. There's just so many accessories in that shop. Necklaces, bangles, rings, hair clips and all sorts of trinkets - all very sparkly, colorful and golden all in one stall it just looked tacky from afar. Plus the area is just so cramped and busy it is hard to just check their stuff out.

But boy I was completely wrong. I found Girl Shoppe's fixed store which is at the 3rd floor of Shopsville arcade by the escalators. The area is bright, quiet and roomy - I had fun taking my time checking everything out. The quiet spot makes it easier to think of which ones I wanted. The accessories, if you could just take them off the shelves and examine them alone are really something. I believe they could rival the likes of accessories Aldo & Forever 2, and you could get them at lower price (it ranges from PhP50 - Php400).

Apart from the trinkets that caught my eye - they also sell metallic/wooden/animal print/wooden bangles. Fancy earnings, hair clips and statement necklaces. Their accessories definitely deserve a closer look.

This is their sign so you can spot them from afar.

I found the perfect pair of white shorts! ♥

The search is over! I found the perfect pair of white shorts! ♥ It isn't exactly white - its is a lot closer to a light khaki with a hint of grey color. But I adore it none the less.

This is my first ever pair of high waisted shorts (yes, I just climbed out of a rock) and I got it at Una Rosa. Surprisingly, they have it in my size! (I'm usually a US11, or UK14 - give or take a few numbers). It sits comfortably at my waist - making it appear smaller than it actually is. It stops at the right height - yay for the illusion of long legs minus the skimpy short shorts and flares ever so slightly from the hips. I love this bit - it makes my thighs look smaller compared to the usual shorts.

The sales lady found this pair of shorts for me and so many other stuff I wouldn't try on my own. They are really into getting the customer to try out the items on the shelves because they are incredibly persuasive.
I was surprised that they carry clothes in my size, I usually don't find local brands with clothes that fit my body type. I'm psyched about this. Their jeans fit my legs and make them look nice, they have dresses and tops that fit my bust area, shorts that fit my waist. Best of all - their price range affordable and much lower than the foreign clothing brands.

They found so many stuff for me to try on I spent 1hr and 30mins in the dressing room. Their spring collection is adorable! A lot of florals, prints and pastel colors - sadly I can't take all of them home. I didn't mind it because I believe that trying on clothes is for free - so I want to try everything just to make sure I get the piece that suits me perfectly. Plus the next time I find myself shopping in a hurry, I'll know which type of clothes look good on me.

Blue Line Cosmetics: Eyeshadows

The eyeshadows from Blue Line Cosmetics are well known for their great color payoff, unbelievable shimmer with considerably wide color range plus they are true mineral eyeshadows (Ingredients: Mica, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide). I was excited with this concept so I placed an order. They have arrived a long time ago at my doorstep, I just haven't blogged about them yet. But I am sure that many are familiar with their photo. They are the eyeshadow pans that I placed in my DIY Makeup/Eyeshadow palette.

Eyeshadows can be ordered from Blue Line Cosmetics in a palette which comes in 2,4,9,15 or 28 (the palette for 9 eyeshadows come in a freestyle magnetic palette), or they can be ordered in pans for USD 3 for 2.5 Oz of product. Being a little kuripot (frugal) I did the math and found out that it is much much cheaper to order the eyeshadows in singles - which is exactly what I did. (Customs and Taxes in the Philippines is another story)

The eyeshadow singles were placed in ziplock bags and well padded by bubble wrap. I was pretty impressed, a journey halfway around the world and none were broken.

The pigment was amazing, the color is exactly as what you see in the pan and it had good color payoff - it is definitely packed with pigment. They all have a beautiful shimmery effect, blending them wasn't that difficult and fallout is minimal. But, I find that the eyeshadow feels a little dry. The upside of this however was that they last considerably long and don't fade that quickly at all. The creasing wasn't that bad either (and virtually nonexistent if the primer Blue Line Cosmetics sells is used). I tested this by going to the gym and working my butt off and the eyeshadows looked as vibrant and as oil free as the time I placed it on my lids. There is one thing that bothers me though - the smell, I really just can't identify what it smells like. It isn't fruity or floral but It doesn't smell bad, it just isn't something my nose is very fond of. (If someone knows what it smells like, do tell me, maybe it'll make me feel better about the smell.)

Things to consider when buying the eyeshadows:

If you're planning to put the singles in a magnetic palette, do indicate that you want the eyeshadows in a tin pan. A couple of eyeshadows I bought came in an aluminum pan and just didn't stick on the magnet. It might not also be a very good idea to order in bulk - which I did. I believe the eyeshadows are pressed manually so some of the pans I received weren't filled to the brim.

Would I buy again?
Maybe but only a select few of the colors. The eyeshadows for me are very cool toned, some not fitting for my warm toned olive skin which is a little tanned by the sun. I love their white, beige and peach shades - they make lovely highlighters. Their rich golds make it into the list that I would purchase again. If my skin tone fell into the "cool" category, I think I would enjoy using these eyeshadows very much.

My First Stiletto Post

My blog's called Photos & Stilettos but there's not a single shoe post in it! That ends now, so allow me to indulge myself as I combine one of my two loves, stilettos and photography! I had fun taking these photos and I feel like it's an interesting way to practice my photography.

This pair of shoes is from Nine West. I purchased it in Hong Kong - where there are a lot of amazing shoe sales ladies. They can make anything - almost anything fit your feet. This is actually a half size smaller than the shoe size I usually wear, I didn't notice it till I got home. Despite that, they fit quite well.

The heels might be high, but the platforms make walking much easier. It adds a little poise to the way I walk too.

Closes with a zipper, and it's easy to get into.

It's made of suede and fishnet I believe.

They are pretty comfortable, easy to walk it, just maintain a straight spine (good for me because I slouch a lot) and walk with poise. What I don't advise with this pair of shoes is to go to a concert that involves a lot of standing and jumping around. It will hurt. But other than that, I ♥ this shoe.

My Orange Obsession: Majolica's Blush in OR 211

Shades of orange is the summer season's hottest colors. I thought I'd give this color a go by getting Majolica Majorca's Blush in OR 211 a beautiful matte peachy orange. It costs PhP 495 for 3 grams of product in SM Watsons. I got it a couple of weeks back when I had an impromptu Majolica Majorca haul. I took my pre-board exams that for around 9 hours, not to mention I had the same thing schedule the day before so my brain felt like mushed tofu. So what better way to cure it than go makeup shopping.

Anyway back to the Majolica Majorca blush. It comes in a clear case, and the blush just slides out when Majolica Majorca's emblem slides out.

It snaps right back in when it is closed. Not to mention I don't have to about the cover coming off its hinges - something that happens often with the packaging of my drugstore blushes.

I love the packaging, it makes choosing the color I want much easier (even if I only have one at the moment). Plus I adore clear plastic cases, I think they look classy.

The pigment of the blush is wonderful. Just one swipe of the brush gets just the right amount of color on the cheek. The color lasts a considerably a long amount of time. I dislike going to the washroom to touch up so the fact that this lasted is definitely a plus for me. But I think the fact that I was wearing Majolica's Skin Lingerie helped it last even longer (blog about this product to come soon).

I'm looking forward to getting more of these, I heard RD 255 is a dupe of NARS orgasm. So if you're in the market for blushes, I think this is one of the brands that you should consider. I really like it. It gives a natural sun kissed flush, I believe it will work well with a bronzer. I think this would be my blush for a while.

4U2 Pro Palette in Classic

The 4U2 I-Pro Palette is considered to be one of the budget friendly make-up palettes available and it costs PhP 994.00 (roughly USD 23.10) at Watsons. You can choose to get the palette in vibrant colorful and shimmery shades, decadent golden hues or dainty matte colors. It comes in a sleek black palette with a big mirror inside (5.5 x 2.5 in) and offers eight colors in each with a total of 20 grams of product (which means each pan has 2.5 grams).

I chose to get mine in Classic and this is what the colors in it looks like.

It has four warm neutrals, soft pink, coral red, light grey and carbon black; they all have a matte finish.

The eye shadows feel like velvet when touched. The pigment is easily picked up and shows up well on the skin - what you see is what you get.

I usually use the warm neutrals to add shape to my eyes and the black one to set my eyeliner. There is no or very minimal fall out with these. You have to watch out for the black one - a little goes a long way. If there's too much of it in the brush, you will experience a little fall out.

The shadows blend well with each other (and even with other brands for that matter). The quickest way to blend these shadows is with your fingers, there wouldn't be any hard edges after. It isn't dry, powdery or chalky. When I used them, they didn't crease or fade on me, but I do have to mention that I almost always use primer for my lids because they tend to get oily.

Would I recommend them to my friends? Yes, I would especially if they're looking for a reasonably priced palette with matte eye shadows to try different sorts of make up looks. Matte shadows aren't commonly found at drugstore brand prices.

Kevyn Aucoin: Making Faces

Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin is the first book I bought covering the subject of make up: the one that started it all. I came across this at a bookstore and saw that photo of the man which Kevyn Acoin transformed into a lady, I was completely blown away.

To tell you the truth I have been struggling with writing this little post about Making Faces. What can yo write about a book written by one of the most sought after makeup masters of this century? But I feel that this precious book deserves a place in this blog of mine.

I could tell you about how he painstakingly goes through every detail of the process for the benefit of the beginner, and how he injects his personal thoughts and techniques in each page, just as a personal mentor would.

Or, how he lovingly introduces each participant of the book before he begins to illustrate how their looks were achieved.

This is Kevyn Aucoin's sister - Kimberly.

He takes you from the everyday looks that you could wear and always gently reminding the reader that make up is there to enhance beauty.

Lisa Marie Presley as the Bombshell - Doesn't it remind you of Marylin Munroe?

To the inspiring period looks that you probably wouldn't wear, but still encouraging the reader to take the techniques he mentions and apply it in a wearable look.

His manner of instruction is simple, he guides you step by step, providing charts whenever needed.

More than 4-5 years after buying Making Faces, it still inspires me, even if I've seen the portraits hundreds of times. By now you may have guessed that this is one of the most loved books in my shelf and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who asks me if it's worth reading. So if you need to be inspired or learn the basics of putting makeup this would be one of the books you could read.

Rouge Coco Shine Campaign by Chanel

I found this inspiring video at the Chanel Makeup Confidential website. I love the video and the make up in it as well. I'm hoping I get to try out this look one of these days. I love the freshness and the simplicity of it. The perfect porcelain skin, the lovely lip colors and my favorite part, the soft muted lavender color finished off the the perfect pair of white shades.

I am thinking of trying this look with my Lovely-Me:ex from The Face Shop in PP402 mixed with white and grey from my 4u2 matte palette. I might go for the lipstick that I have which is closest to Monte Carlo - and that is FACE&it Wrinkle Repair Lipstick (The Face Shop) in OR 201. I might have to use just a little bit of it since I think it looks like it is a little darker than Monte Carlo

The Majolica Passion

It looks like Majolica Majorca will be very passionate this summer. I was browsing around the Majolica Majorca site and I stumbled upon their limited edition and new items. I think the red mascara will be limited edition while the nail polish as well as the Majoromantica perfume is here to stay.

The berry red mascara looks quite interesting and I'm a little inclined to go and check it out. I don't know where it could be used though but if I'll ever try out those fashion editorial makeup, I'd probably want to have that in my collection.

The Majoromantica perfume on the other hand is something that catches my fancy. I like the packaging, it's cute and elaborate - my cup of tea. It's supposed to have a fruity top note that would develop to a sweet floral scent for its middle note and finishes with all the scents that I love: vanilla, maple and brown sugar - yum!

Quick Guide: Majolica Majorca Eyeshadow Palettes

This is the question I asked myself while I stood in front of the Majolica Majorca counter: "What is the difference between the three Majolica Majorca Eyeshadow lines: Majolook: Trick on Powder; Majolook: Illuminator and the Jeweling Eyes". To satisfy my curiosity, I brought home one from each line - and stared at it until I figured it out.

Simply put, the answer lies in their finish.

Jeweling Eyes

This line comes in a myriad of colors. They have pinks, blues, greens, purples and golds blended in with a whole lot of light reflecting glitter in a four pan palette. Even the darkest shade, which could be used to contour, has glitter. There are currently 10 palettes you can choose from in this line. These palettes can give you a fresh and colorful look (should you desire to purchase the palettes with vibrant colors) or a neutral eye that has a whole lot of sparkle to it. The shades of this line could be mostly used for day make up and the times you would want to sport a look with eye shadows that has a lot of sparkle on them.

Majolook: Trick on Powder

This palette comes in green or brown - more conservative colors. The eye shadows of this palette you get a shimmery-satin finish. You can follow the prescribed method of eyeshadow application indicated in a small piece of paper that is packaged with the product. The results are supposed to give you a slightly shimmery finish with a 3-D like effect. This is for someone who would want to have a more sophisticated and sultry look. I would probably use this for a night out.

Majolook: Illuminator

The uniqueness of this palette comes not in the finish of the eye shadows, which are a lot like the Majolook: Trick on Powder's finish, but in a white iridescent cream that comes with the palette. It is to be used as an eyeshadow base which will heighten the glowy finish of the eye shadows included in the palette. This palette comes in a lively pink or in three different tones of brown (warm, neutral and cool). I think this finish would be perfect for a summery look, and could be used day or night. Use more of the lighter colors for the day and the darker colors for the night time.

And this is how, I believe, they are different from each other.

Shopping at Suesh

Makeup brushes make the lives of makeup-junkies much easier. If used correctly, they provide precise application, flawless blending and sanitation. Unfortunately, these brushes can either be too pricey or out of reach. But I've head about an affordable brush brand called Suesh and since their shop is near my place, I decided to test my driving skills, challenge my parking capabilities, and pay a visit in their quiet little shop at 34 Wilson St.

At first you wouldn't notice their shop, it's located in the far end, of right side of the establishment. Their floor space isn't that big either. But, I have to say, it's not the same for the products that they carry. Appart from their brushes they also carry various products like OCC, Grafthofabian, Cosiline Eyeshadows, NYX, disposable cosmetic accessories, carrying cases; just to name a few.

Their brushes range from PhP 200 to PhP 900 (about USD 4.50 to USD 22), depending on their size and the type of hair used. They can also be bought in sets which I think is a lot cheaper than buying them individually.

For my first purchase, I opted to go for the small ticket items just to test them out and see if I like them. These were the mini fan brush, eyedefiner and the smudge brush. They all have wooden handles that are painted matte black and their ferule is made of metal that has a semi-glossy black coat.

First off is the smudge brush, it is made of pony hair, with a blackwood handle and costs P 300.00

This brush is tightly packed with hair and it feels soft. It helps blend out the harsh edges quickly and easily, I have no complaints about this brush at all.

Next is the Eye definer Brush which costs P 350

forgive me if it's a little dirty, I was just so excited to use it and wasn't able to take off the gel eyeliner properly.

This solved my eyelining problems. It made tight lining easy and quick, which means it gave the illusion of thicker eyelashes and it equates to me being very happy.

And last is the Mini mini Fan brush otherwise known as the mascara brush, P 200

I love putting mascara on my lower lashes, it helps with the illusion of wider and brighter eyes, I was less clumsy with this brush and helped reach those areas I normally couldn't reach with my mascara wand. Taking off the mascara from the brush after you've used it is also very easy.

I must say that I am incredibly satisfied with my purchase, the brushes are affordable and they feel very much like the expensive brands. The hairs are soft and the built is durable. And right now, I'm actually looking forward to checking out more of their brushes.

DIY: Makeup/Eye Shadow Palette

I recently bought a bunch of eyeshadow pans. But I had one problem, I didn't have anything that could store them. The two options I had was to spend or make a D.I.Y. eye shadow palette.
I've heard of makeup palettes being sold in the internet and pro stores but they are quite pricey plus shipping and customs add to their price tag. There are suggestions all over the internet about how you can make your own, but I'm not the DIY: eye shadow palette with a DVD case kind of girl.

When I was hunting for the perfect makeup palette for me, I had this checklist in my head:

it has to be magnetized - sticking a magnet at the bottom of each eyeshadow pan is too time consuming
the cover has to be attached to the part where the eye shadows are kept - otherwise I might loose it or forget to cover it
it preferably should be made out of plastic with a clear cover
it should be shallow enough to make it seem like the container is specially made for eye shadows
it should be able to hold a lot of pans
and it should be affordable.

I didn't find anything that met my standards and being a little obsessive compulsive, I refused to settle for anything less. But a trip to a nearby Japan Home store ended this - I was able to find materials that stirred my creative juices. I think I spent around P 170 (around USD 4) for this whole project.

So this is what I got from Japan home, the watercolor palette (P 66) and a pack of magnetic photo frames that's supposed to be for the fridge (P 66, there are 3 pcs in each pack). The magnetic photo frames had a clear plastic slot of the photos so I just took that out since I won't be using it for that purpose.

The super glue - you can get that just about anywhere. You'd also need a permanent marker, a pair of scissors and scratch paper.

Step 1:

I took out the water color so I was left with the palette's case. Then I got a piece of scratch paper and folded it until I got the size of the palette. This will be used as a stencil to trace over the magnetic sheets.

Step 2:

I then took the stencil, placed it on top of the magnetic sheet and marked out the areas that needed to be trimmed.

The magnetic sheets I got were a little too short for the palette so I just took another piece to cover the remaining area. The second sheet might take a little longer. There might be a need to make adjustments to make sure that both sheets fit snugly in the palette.

Just a little tip if you're going to use two sheets, make sure that you use the side edges for the seam in the palette, that way there won't be gaps. The edge tends to be uneven if you're the one who cut it.

Step 3:

Use the super glue to stick the magnetic sheets on to the plastic palette. I went a little crazy with the super glue, I just wanted to use most of it since they dry out even before I use them up, but you don't need that much. Since I used two sheets, I placed enough glue on the palette for the first sheet and let it set for a while and after that' I did the same with the second one. And then you're done!

Just let it dry and you can use it to hold your eye shadow pans.

This is my palette and it holds 32 colors in it.

Majolica Majorca in SM Megamall

Majolica Majorca is now open in SM Megamall! Which makes me, one really happy makeup-junkie! They have two stalls at the ground floor of the cosmetics area in the department store where you can test out their products but they keep their stocks in the stall located by the escalators. As a treat to their customers, they give away freebies when you purchase at least PhP 1000. You either get their sparkly gold bag, which I just adore, or their Honey Plump Gloss Neo in hot pink.

I find their sales ladies friendly and accommodating always ready to answer your questions or suggest a product. I even dropped a few eye shadows accidentally (clumsiness brought about the day's activities) and they didn't get upset. And because of that I can also attest that Majolica Majorca's packaging is durable.

I got quite a number of their products including their famous Lash Expander and a product that I got me really curious - the Skin Lingerie Pore Cover. I can't wait to try them. I will write about these after I get to test them out for quite a while.
